Lawn Care Tips

No matter where you live, save for perhaps the frozen tundra of the Arctic, lawn care is most likely a year round chore performed by you or someone on your payroll. These tips will make the 12 month duty that much easier on a day to day basis, resulting in greener, easier to care for lawns for all to enjoy.

  • Watering should ideally occur in the morning, lessening the impact of evaporation and ensuring your lawn gets an ample amount of water. On the surface it makes just as much sense to water at night as the sun will be of less impact, though night watering does not offer a chance for the lawn to dry before the next day, increasing the risk of mold and disease.
  • Conversely, it is better to mow in the evening, as your grass is under less stress in the cooler hours and not wet from morning watering. Never mow wet grass as it risks not only the grass’ health but your own were you to slip and fall.
  • It may seem sanitary to collect the chopped grass as you mow, but simply leaving it is more than fine by Mother Nature. Clippings left on the lawn will decompose rapidly and can provide up to 25 of the fertilizer requirement, saving both time and money.
  • Alternate the direction you mow the lawn each individual mow. The passing of lawnmower wheels repeatedly in the same direction could result in a rut over time.
  • Sharpen your blades. This helps to ensure a clean cut every time, maintaining the long term well being of the grass.
  • It actually matters how often you mow your lawn. More so than controlling your yard from being overgrown and unsightly, regular lawn mowing stimulates grass growth, leaving oft-mowed yards lusciously green and neighbors green with envy.
