Placing an empty tuna fish in the center of your lawn can will help you determine if your lawn is getting enough water. Your lawn should get at least an inch of water per week. If there is a drought problem in your area, and your lawn has not gotten any water, it is important to add water to your lawn.

Feeding Your Lawn

If you are moving into a new house for the first time, you will need to purchase lawn care equipment to maintain your lawn. There are several items that you must own, and as you become more proficient, you may wish add to your collection at a later date.
The first item you will need is a lawn mower. There are many options to choose from depending on the size of your lawn and its configuration. Standard suburban size lawns will usually require a gas-powered or electric lawn mower. If there are many trees or landscaping to negotiate around as you mow, the cord of an electric mower will be a hindrance, and a gas-powered mower may be a better choice.Want more? Click here/tag However, be aware that you will need to learn to start and maintain the small engine. Larger lawns of an acre or more may warrant the purchase of a riding lawn mower.
The next requirement is a trimmer/edger device, which has a nylon line that is used to edge and trim the lawn. The trimmer can be electric or gas-powered, and just like the lawn mowers, each has advantages and disadvantages. The choice of an electric or gas-powered model will depend on your personal preferences.
Purchasing these two lawn care items will get you started in achieving that perfect lawn look with the least amount of effort, so you can spend more time enjoying your new lawn.

The weather’s beautiful and the plants are blooming…get out there and get your garden growing! Here are a few tips for getting your gardening off to a great start this year.
Invest in energy efficient tools – Manufacturers are rushing to create lines of energy efficient edgers, blowers and even lawn mowers so get in on the action and save some money, not to mention the environment. Check with texaselectricityproviders.com to find out what power rates are in your area to see how much you’ll save.
Get the family involved – Kids love playing in the dirt so why not have them help you till the soil or plant some new window boxes? There’s no greater satisfaction than eating home grown vegetables and your kids will be ecstatic to get to help you in the garden.
Hire a landscaper – If all else fails and you’re falling behind, enlist the help of a professional landscaping company so your yard won’t suffer. They know the correct fertilizers and techniques for your yard and can often guide you in the right direction until you’re ready to take the reigns.

Summer time is around the corner, and lawn care is important to many homeowners. A common problem during the summer for many homeowners is the build-up of thatch on their lawn. Thatch can be viewed as a blanket that is smothering your lawn. It is described as a layer of living and dead organic material (dead grass, leaves and other un-decomposed materials) that rest between the turf grass and soil. Having thatch build-up on the grass can cause a lot of lawn problems. Too much thatch on a lawn can decrease the amount of moisture that the lawn can soak up; and can block fertilizers and water from getting to the soil. Having thatch grass can create a problem with pest infestations, because pests love making their home under thick layers of thatch. When you have pest infestations in your lawn, it becomes difficult to treat your grass, because pesticides cannot reach the soil where the pests live. Fungal diseases are also contracted in thatch grass, such as fungal spores, leaf spot, dollar spot, and other fungal diseases. Since thatch grass is unhealthy grass, there is also a problem with weeds growing, because the grass cannot compete with the weeds.

There are some simple ways to tell if you have a healthy lawn. Specailists in lawn care can run tests and give you an indepth analysis, but your eyes can give you some very basic information first. By looking around you can spot the signs of a healthy lawn. First of all you should not have any bare spots. The grass should be full and thick. Walk across the lawn to be sure you still feel the firm ground underneath the grass. If it feels padded the grass is getting to thick and can cause the root system to die. This could result in large dead spots either in patches or all over the lawn. Grass should have a nice healthy color. Different types of grass come in different shades. Be aware of what grass is growing in your yard so you will know what color to look for. Weeds can be a big problem. They can take over a lawn quickly and force the grass out. The lawn should be as weed free as possible. Take care of them as soon as they are spotted. A healthy lawn will be well watered. Water if you are seeing dry areas.

There are not many different kinds of products needed to maintain a luscious and pleasing lawn. The key to getting the most benefit from necessary products is learning what grass needs are and then acting to meet those needs.

Sound watering and mowing practices will serve to reduce the need of products such as pesticides and herbicides. Watering occasionally and deeply encourages deeper root growth where moisture content and soil temperature are more consistent. Mowing so that not more than about one-third of the grass blade is removed at one time reduces shock to individual plants in terms of losing some of their food-producing capacity. Both of these practices will result in healthier individual plants that are less susceptible to insects and weeds.

Fertilizer is a necessary product. The first number in the analysis is the amount of nitrogen contained in the fertilizer and is what contributes to healthy green color and above-ground growth. The other two numbers supply information about phosphorus and potassium, which support healthy root systems. Applied according to recommended rates, fertilizer gives lawn grass all of the major nutrients it needs. Only a small amount is necessary, and “more” is not better. Over-fertilizing can lead to a weaker lawn rather than a stronger one.

Many annual weeds can be controlled through the use of a pre-emergent herbicide applied in early spring before much active growth occurs. This form prevents last year’s weed seeds from germinating. Where broadleaf weeds create problems, there are herbicides that can be applied to the entire lawn. Those products attack only what is not grass.

Good maintenance and regular care reduce the need for other products. Other products will be needed less often and in less quantity.

Every house with a yard wants a lawn that projects an image of stability, security and attentiveness. Your grass actively affects the way your house is seen by neighbors and passers-by, as even otherwise pristine homes can be perceived in a negatively light thanks to an overgrown or unsightly lawn. Of course, proper lawn care isn’t suited to every home owners time or interests. Fortunately, there are professional lawn care services in nearly every town and city, with the tools, expertise and experience to give your lawn the treatment it deserves. If your regular upkeep is starting slack, ask yourself the following self-evaluative questions:Do I have a natural aptitude for lawn care?A lawn mower or pair of clippers can look and feel as out of place in an individual’s hands as a pair of overalls at a fashion show. Some people simply aren’t good at basic yard work. We all have different talents; there’s no shame if lawn care just isn’t in your wheelhouse.Do I have the time it takes to look after my lawn?Even early to bed, early to rise hard, hard working individuals can be crunched for time with a busy schedule, making time to dedicate to your yard a luxury that’s just not available. If you want your lawn to stay green, fresh cut and healthy, it won’t happen with a here-and-there level of dedication. Can I afford lawn care?Hiring lawn professionals can be convenient and reap great results, but as always, it’s much cheaper to do it yourself. Assess your budget realistically and see if avoiding the hassle is worth the cost.Do I enjoy tending to my yard? For some individuals, their lawn is a passion project, something to take pride in. If you love your lawn as a reflection of your own hard work or use yard work as a way to blow off steam, there’s no sense in passing off a chore you relish.

Offering an unparalleled selection of bird houses and bird feeders with hundreds of options available, whether it be by specific bird type, brand, design or decoration, one might think the Backyard Bird Company caters to bettering the livelihood of common birds as they fly in and out of residential areas across the world. This would only partially true. While yes, the Backyard Bird Company does love birds, they also harbor a special place in their business for the yard’s other fliers, crawlers and scurriers. While most companies specializing in bird products seek to avoid pesky squirrels at all costs, the Back Yard Bird Company offers a solution for both animals to live in harmony, offering Squirrel Feeders, as well as Bat Houses, Butterfly Houses and Ladybug & Bee feeders true friends of all animals in plain porch view. Though the Backyard Bird Company does offer squirrel-proof bird feeders in order to ensure separate space for both species, all such models are squirrel safe and made up for by the squirrel feeders designed specifically with our bushy tailed buds in mind. For years at-home bird watchers have fallen victim to squirrels who scare off the feathered diners and take the bird feed as their own personal appetizers. After brainstorming ways to rectify the problem, Backyard Bird Company decided, “if you can’t beat ‘em, feed ‘em.” After all, squirrels can be equally entertaining to watch. Though not nearly as exotic, squirrels compensate in terms of viewing pleasure by being compulsively neurotic, twitching from side to side, startling themselves, then running full speed in partially thought out patterns. Squirrels are unintentionally hilarious, far better to be enjoyed than annoyed by, so next time you browse the Backyard Bird Company for your next bird buy, consider a squirrel feeder to round out your unofficial pet collection.
